Detune teaches music production in a few minutes a day, entirely by ear

Four Detune screens: the Sound Synthesis path, an Attack and Release tutorial, a waveform-matching challenge, and the daily patch.

Most people meet a synthesizer as a wall of knobs attached to a preset list. They scroll until something sounds good. Detune starts from the opposite end: one control, one sound, and an ear trained to hear the difference. A lesson takes a few minutes and ends with a patch you built yourself.

Two paths, 39 modules

Sound Synthesis runs in seven acts, from a first waveform through envelopes, filters, the LFO and the mod matrix to FM, ring modulation and hard sync. Each act closes with a checkpoint patch built from scratch and kept — an '80s pluck, a synthwave lead, a dubstep wobble, an ambient pad, a metallic bell. Music Theory is ten modules covering scales, triads, chord progressions, keys and rhythm, taught entirely by ear. Nothing asks you to read notation.

The instrument

Two oscillators, a resonant filter, two envelopes, an LFO and a modulation matrix, along with a sub oscillator, a noise source and a rack of effects covering delay, reverb, distortion, chorus and phaser. The same engine powers every tutorial, every challenge and free play, so what you learn on is what you make on.

Challenges are the part that does the teaching. Pick the brighter sound. Match a target patch by ear. Place the notes. A daily patch gives one small sound-design problem a day, and hearts and streaks keep the habit going without turning the app into a game about itself.

“AI can make a finished track in seconds, and it asks almost nothing of you. But I'm concerned people aren't learning much from one-shotting their way to a result. They're jumping straight to the destination, when the real joy is the process in between. I built Detune so anyone can learn sound synthesis and music production — entirely by ear, on a real synth, in lessons that take a few minutes.”

“The software that teaches this is desktop software, and it isn't cheap. I wanted something bite-sized that's always with you.”
